Information for your day: Commemorating the terror attacks

Your guide to events marking the September 11 attacks on the United States.

AUCKLAND

Auckland will be among the first cities in the world to commemorate the attacks with a flag-raising service at dawn today on the Harbour Bridge. Auckland Mayor John Banks and a representative from the US consulate, Doug Berry, will raise the US and New Zealand flags and a Navy bugler will play Taps. The flags will be flown at half-mast and lowered at sunset.

The Orlando Singers perform Mozart's Requiem at 8.46am in St Luke's Presbyterian Church, 130 Remuera Rd, to launch a Rolling Requiem that will include more than 150 events in countries around the world. The music begins at 8.46am in every time zone - the time the first plane hit the World Trade Centre in New York. A second performance of the requiem will start in Auckland at 8pm at the same venue. A service of remembrance will be held in St Mary's in Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell at 12.30pm. The church will be open from 11am to 3pm for private observances.

Masses for peace and remembrance start at 7am, 12.15pm and 7.30pm at St Patrick's Cathedral in Wyndham St. Fire, police and ambulance officers will parade at the evening service.

Muslims and Christians will join hands to link the Auckland Mosque in Vermont St, Ponsonby, to the Catholic church across the road, at 1pm.

Tomorrow, Headlines in History, a display of newspaper headlines from around the world as they reported on the attacks, will open at the Auckland City Central Library, Lorne St.

Also tomorrow, Images from Ground Zero, photographs of the World Trade Centre site taken by Joel Meyerowitz will open to the public in the portrait gallery of the Auckland Museum.

HAMILTON

A public service will be held at 12.30pm in the Civic Plaza in front of the council chambers. The Waikato Rivertones Chorus of Sweet Adelines, the Hamilton Salvation Army Band, members of the Waikato Times Brass Band and Hamilton Hair Razors Chorus will take part.

TAURANGA

A parade of professional and volunteer firefighters, police officers and St John Ambulance personnel will set off from Hamilton St near the Tauranga Domain at 11.30am and make their way to Mid-City Mall by noon, where a minute's silence will be observed.

ROTORUA

The Rotorua Fire Service will hold a brief flag ceremony at midday outside the station at 11 Biak St. The public are welcome.

WELLINGTON

At midday a commemoration service will be held at St Andrew's On The Terrace. Members of the NZ Symphony Orchestra will play works by American composers.

US Ambassador Charles Swindells, the Prime Minister, the Governor-General and MPs will attend a memorial service in St Paul's Anglican Cathedral at 12.30pm.

NEW ZEALAND

Fire Service and other emergency vehicles will be driven with dipped headlights today. Fire station flags will be flown at half-mast.

UNITED STATES

A moment of silence will be observed at the White House at 8.46am. President George W. Bush and the First Lady will then attend ceremonies at the Pentagon and at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. At 4.30pm the President will lay a wreath at Ground Zero, New York, and at 9.01pm will address the nation.

A major civil ceremony will take place at Ground Zero, beginning with a moment's silence at 8.46am.
