A one-year-old boy is to have surgery today for serious burns, after he fell into a fire in Edgecumbe in Bay of Plenty.
TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter pilot Liam Brettkelly says the boy was visiting family when he stumbled into the fire, which a family member was using to burn rubbish.
The boy received severe burns and was treated by St John ambulance staff before being flown to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.
He's in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.
