Massey University's Human Physiology group is asking for parents with babies between 1 and 4 months old to help with an infant colic study.
The team, comprising Professor Roger Lentle, Associate Professor Gordon Reynolds and Peta Larsen, is researching to identify the underlying cause of infant colic.
The aim of the project is to determine whether electrogastrography (EGG), a simple electrical measuring procedure similar to an ECG, can detect differences in the stomach activity between babies with and without colic.
The team needs 60 babies with feeding difficulties or restlessness after feeding, and 60 healthy babies of similar age to compare them with. It is preferred the babies have been breast fed.
Participation involves Ms Larsen visiting the parent and baby at their home to take readings with EGG equipment over a 2-hour period. If the recording goes well, the procedure will be repeated in a week. Participants will receive a $20 gift voucher for petrol or shopping after each session.
