With the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification still in full bloom, it is an interesting time to hold the biennial regional International Association for Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology conference. Genes will be in the air at the Grand Chateau, Mt Ruapehu, until Friday.
Tony Hawk, superstar
Californian skateboarding superstar Tony Hawk - the first person to do a 90-degree rotation and land with all his bones intact, and to have two PlayStation games to his name - presents a free wowfest of his skills in Aotea Square, Auckland, at 4.30 pm today. He will also appear at the Xtreme Air event at the Waikato Events Centre, Hamilton, at 5.30 pm on Friday.
Hero events
The Hero parade may be a damp memory but the festival goes on. Kainga Rua is at Alleluyah from 7 pm to 8.30 pm. Strictly limited seating, $15 waged, $10 unwaged. Women's Performance at The Temple from 9 pm, entry $5. The Dating Game Part 2: the winners from part 1 return to the Cabaret Club in the Civic to tell all from 10 pm. $5.
Stroke and stride
The seventh race in the popular Reesby & Company Stroke & Stride Series heads off from St Heliers Bay at 6.15 pm. Entry fee is $18. The race involves a 750m swim and a 5km run.
