The Department of Labour is searching for 10 Indonesian fishermen who jumped ship at Port Nelson yesterday.
A Department of Labour spokeswoman said it was not known how the men left the port.
Department of Labour inspectors were waiting to receive their passports as steps were being taken to locate them, she said.
No other information, including the name of the fishermen's ship or shipping company, was available this morning.
Senior Constable Phil Wylie of Nelson police said police had been informed of the situation in case an incident involving any of the men arose.
