A boatie who became stranded on a sandbar in Tauranga Harbour in strong winds has now escaped, several hours before high tide.
The yacht, named Celtic Trader, had been battered by strong winds today but remained wedged on the main sandbar between Matakana Island and Pilot Bay.
Emergency services were notified of the stricken yacht this afternoon. It is understood the owner is unhurt.
However, the boat had since managed to re-float and sailed away about 3pm.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council harbourmaster Peter Buell said there were a number of areas in Tauranga Harbour that were great for boating but could be dangerous at low tide.
''It's a good idea to become familiar with these areas and always do due diligence before you head out,'' he said.
