Incoming Governor General Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae has been issued a knighthood by the Queen.
Prime Minister John Key today commended Lt Gen Sir Mateparae's induction as an Additional Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
He said the honour recognised the outstanding achievements of the former Defence chief and current head of the Government Security Communications Bureau.
"These appointments recognise Sir Jerry's leadership, mana and dedicated service to his country. He is an outstanding New Zealander, and will bring all these qualities to his term as Governor-General."
The knighthood is a first step in Lt Gen Sir Mateparae's path to take over from current Governor General Anand Satyanand in on August 31.
When he takes office, he will also become Chancellor and Principal Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and Principal Companion of the Queen's Service Order.
