KEY POINTS:
There are renewed calls for urgent fencing of motorway overbridges.
Auckland police had to close off part of the city's southern motorway yesterday as they dealt with an incident on the Symonds Street overbridge.
No one was injured.
Automobile Association spokesman Simon Lambourne says Transit figures show 56 objects have been thrown from 28 overbridges in the past two years.
He says more fences are needed as soon as possible.
Mr Lambourne says the AA will be pushing for this in submissions to Transit's draft 10-year plan this coming week.
He says bridges over the southern motorway are most in need.
Mr Lambourne says motorists need to be protected now to prevent future fatalities and injuries.
