Carterton cafes were also crowded, and six other stores opened up especially to take advantage of the increase in visitors, Mrs Broughton said.
Amongst the 21 stallholders were Lavender Abbey, Laughing Owl Fudge, Sinom Catering, Paulownia Estate winery, Martinborough Organic Soap Company, a gardening collective selling homegrown produce, and a fundraising sizzle.
Clydesdale carriage rides were also on offer to mark the opening of the market.
Mrs Broughton said she and her fellow organisers would be looking to add more interesting attractions to future markets.
Feedback on the first market is encouraged, and those who would like to share their ideas can complete the online form at http://bit.ly/1zbNtrq.
The Carterton Farmers' Market runs from 9am to 1pm every Sunday at the Memorial Square on High St.
