The trust behind Auckland's Skypath is calling a new plan with the Auckland Council and the Public Infrastructure Partnership Fund a "major step forward".
A new non-binding heads of agreement document sets out how the three groups will carry out feasibility work needed before a final funding deal.
The AucklandHarbour Bridge Pathway Trust's proposal would see a separate path for cycling and walking built across the Auckland Harbour Bridge from St Heliers to Devonport. Tourists, casual users and commuters are expected to pay between $2 and $4 to cross the path.
The $33.5m project will be built as a public-private partnership between the fund, the trust and the council, with ownership eventually passing to the council.
Auckland's Skypath is one of a wide group of social enterprise ventures supported by the Akina Foundation (formerly the Hikurangi Foundation).
A resource consent application for the project will be lodged in early June.
The Akina Foundation is opening a new accelerator programme, the Launchpad. If you have a great business solution to a social or environmental problem, or are interested in supporting the programme, go to contactlaunchpad.org.nz. Applications open on Monday 26 May and close on Sunday 29 June.
