An 11-year-old boy impaled at an Auckland school this morning asked his rescuers not to amputate his leg as they cut him off a school fence.
The boy was climbing the fence at Liston College in Henderson, west Auckland, when he slipped and was impaled through his upper shin and knee by a security spike.
Teachers supported his weight while they waited for emergency services to arrive.
Titirangi senior station officer Jim Hoskins said the boy was lucid and calm as fire crews cut him off the fence with the jaws of life.
"He did make a comment when we started the hydraulic pump - please don't take my leg. He was pretty pale, but I thought he was brave. Not screaming or crying.
"For us it was a walk in the park."
The boy was able to shift his weight as he was cut free from the fence and was taken to Starship Hospital with the rod still embedded in his leg, Mr Hoskins said.
He said it was unlikely the boy would suffer permanent damage from the injury.
