KEY POINTS:
We can put up with speeding tickets on clear open roads. We can put up with stories of nasty behaviour and vileness from 20 years ago.
But what we absolutely cannot put up with is the Morrinsville farmer going to court.
This is the man who police say caught two guys allegedly trying to steal petrol from his property. He rang his mate, parked his car in the driveway to stop the robbers making a getaway and then fired two warning shots over their heads.
He then suggested they might like to leave their vehicle and lie on the ground, by which time his mate had arrived, and the alleged thieves were detained until the official reinforcements arrived.
He didn't beat them up. He didn't shoot them. He just stopped two guys taking his property and ensured they were held accountable for their actions.
Now Detective Sergeant Greg Nicholls of the Hamilton CIB says police are taking their time in deciding whether or not to lay charges because the ramifications of their decision will be far-reaching.
Come on, Greg - give it a rest. Why not give the farmer and his mate Police 5 badges and make them deputies.
The public would love you for it.
