KEY POINTS:
TONY LASKEY
GENERAL MANAGER, CONTIKI HOLIDAYS (NZ) LTD
What was your first job?
A bank teller at the National Bank in Gisborne. It was 1992 and I was paid $16,000 a year.
How did you get that job?
I applied for it and got it. I stayed two years, starting in Gisborne before being transferred to Auckland's Queen St.
Did you enjoy it?
I loved it. The bank had a clear career pathway. As a new entrant to the workforce I was able to plan for where I wanted to be and the bank provided the training and support to help me to get there. The job was also very social!
What did you learn?
Take every opportunity to increase your knowledge.
What was your first boss like?
My boss was great. Throughout my career I've always had inspirational bosses to learn from.
Why did you leave?
To join a wholesale flooring company, Jacobsens, as a sales rep. This was a company I had approached two years earlier (before starting at the bank). Persistence pays off.
Any advice for someone starting?
"Stick to your knitting." If you find an industry/company that you enjoy working in/for, then stick with it. You'll find your career advances more quickly than if you chop and change. (And it looks better on your CV, too). My other key bit of advice is to get out there and see the world. Go travelling. It'll open your eyes.
Is it harder for people entering the job market now?
It's different. When I entered the workforce the job market was tight. The Herald had a situations vacant page (or two) as opposed to a full supplement like today. There are many more options. For a strong candidate, the world is your oyster.
