KEY POINTS:
Sharlene Herbig
General Manager, Ventura Inn and Suites
What was your first job?
It was at the McDonald's Restaurant in Rotorua. It was 1994 and I was 17, my first pay rate was $7.25.
How did you get that job?
By filling in an application form. Back then it was much easier to get a job in a fast food restaurant, they would normally hire you on the spot.
Did you enjoy it?
I did enjoy it as there were a lot of people who were my age. The work was hard as it was always busy, being the only McDonald's in Rotorua at the time.
What did you learn?
I learnt about customer service and punctuality. It wasn't like school - you couldn't come in late or not show up without a good reason. Some learnt that the hard way.
What was your boss like?
My boss was a good guy but he did stress out a lot. He was very highly strung, but being a manager in that type of industry can make anyone a bit stressed.
Why did you leave?
I was there for nearly four years and left to pursue other employment opportunities in the hospitality industry.
Any advice for someone starting?
You may think you know what career path you want to take but sometimes you end up going in another direction. Don't settle for just anything, think of your goals and go for it. You can become whatever you want if you put your mind to it.
Is it harder for people entering the job market now?
It depends on the industry you choose. Some positions need you to be fully qualified and some don't. If you have the right attitude it will be easier for you to get further in the career you choose.
