What was your first job?
I worked as a registered comprehensive nurse in a public hospital on a surgical ward. I was 21 and paid about $35,000 plus penal rates.
How did you get that job?
I worked on the ward during my practical training as a student nurse; I must have impressed them as they offered me a position once I graduated. I was thrilled as there was a shortage of nursing positions and most of my friends had to leave for Australia and the UK to find work.
Did you enjoy it?
Yes, it was great to be in the work force, finally getting paid, and I loved working with people, having some responsibility for my own patients.
It was interesting being involved in theatre/operations and I enjoyed helping with the recovery of the patients following theatre.
What parts of the job didn't you like?
Shift work - really bad when you want to socialise during the weekend.
What did you learn?
That I enjoyed taking on responsibility, challenging myself, as well as working with other team members.
What was your boss like?
She was supportive, not your usual "matron" charge nurse.
Why did you leave?
After about three years I moved to an antenatal/postnatal ward while I trained in midwifery. I then worked in delivery suite before becoming self-employed as a midwife.
Advice for someone starting out?
Try your best all the time, even if you are a student or offering to do work on a voluntary basis to get your foot in the door.
It's about getting out there, getting known and building a great reputation for excellence. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and take opportunities that scare you. Find a mentor and pick their brains as well as get their support.
