KEY POINTS:
Justin Vaughan
Chief executive, NZ Cricket
What was your first job?
My first full-time job was as a junior doctor in 1991. After medical school, I applied to work within Auckland so I could continue playing cricket for Auckland. I think I was paid around $35,000 for a 60-hour week. I worked in the Auckland hospital system for three to four years.
Did you enjoy it?
I honestly have enjoyed every job I have worked in. The challenges of medicine are significant - it is a great mixture that requires intellect and the ability to perform complex physical procedures. And the opportunity to help patients in need is fulfilling. The hours were unsocial though.
What did you learn?
The value in being organised - if you are efficient and plan your tasks then you can relax and enjoy it.
What was your boss like?
My first boss was Dr Rick Cutfield at North Shore Hospital. He was great - good with the patients, calm and thoughtful - and supportive of the juniors.
Why did you leave?
At first, I left to fulfil my sporting aspirations but then I exited out of clinical medicine to pursue commercial roles.
Advice for someone starting out?
Enjoy what you do and don't think you need to know where you want to be in five to 10 years. And always look out for opportunities.
Is it different for people entering the job market now?
For talented and ambitious people, I think it is possibly easier.
