KEY POINTS:
IAN BOYD
Fitec CEO
What was your first job?
My first job was with the New Zealand Forest Service in 1972. I was 22 years old and received a salary of $3000.
How did you get that job?
I completed a degree at Canterbury University on a forest service scholarship. It came with a four-year bond so the job was part of a package.
Did you enjoy it?
It was an excellent introduction to the workforce. The scholarship programme included an induction course, vacation work, and hands-on work experience in all operations and field supervisor responsibilities. I enjoyed the physical work and interacting with people at all levels.
What did you learn?
The experience was invaluable in teaching me about the operations and people management. Later in my career, I often referred back to what I had learnt during this time.
What was your boss like?
He was always supportive and facilitated a range of experiences for me and encouraged my progress, albeit on a less structured basis than one might expect today.
How long did you stay?
After a year I moved on to a professional field role with the Forest Service at a different location.
When my bond expired, I joined Fletcher Forests and progressed to management roles. I was fortunate to be able to participate in the growth that resulted in Fletcher Challenge.
Advice to someone starting out?
Make the most of your induction period and the initial hands-on experience. It is invaluable for your career.
I was lucky enough to have good mentors during various stages of my career - be aware of opportunities for such relationships with senior people.
Is it harder for people entering the workforce now?
It is certainly more competitive. On the other hand, there is a wider range of opportunities and the prospects are more global.
