KEY POINTS:
Bruce Pilbrow
Ceo Parents INC
What was your first job?
I started as a junior for Buttle Wilson, a share-broking company, in 1987. I was fresh out of the seventh form and keen to get into the workforce. I was on $12,000 - I was rich!
I was promoted to account clerk and, after about a year, a position became available for an accounts clerk in an advertising agency (Mainstream/FCB).
Did you enjoy it?
Once in advertising I loved it - the energy, creativity and people. Within six months I moved into media planning and buying and, after another six months, I was moved into account service as an account executive. I had found my niche.
What did you learn?
You have to have a passion for your chosen career. Secondly, spend the time training towards what you want to do. If you are not sure as to where to head, do a "gap" year. Thirdly, be yourself.
I gained confidence in my abilities but I realised a better education was also important so I started a tertiary qualification in marketing part-time.
What was your boss like?
I had the encouragement and creativeness of Roger Brittenden (creative director of Mainstream). He was an interesting character - walked around the agency with his cricket bat! My account director was also professional and encouraging.
Any advice for someone starting out?
If you are going into business it is important to get a higher education. A degree teaches you how to find information, think for yourself and form informed opinions.
Coupled with job experience, it makes you more employable.
When we look for staff at Parents Inc, we are looking for that heart for what we do. I like working with people who believe in what we do, rather than people who only just go through the motions.
