This wide-eyed 5-year-old female domestic short hair was handed in to the SPCA Animal Village at Mangere on November 4 with a case of cat flu.
After nearly six weeks' treatment at the SPCA's animal hospital, she has a clean bill of health and is ready for adoption.
Her bright yellow eyes make a striking contrast with her dark coat.
SPCA hospital manager Sam Skelton says 15 per cent of cats coming into the village have cat flu, which is very contagious.
Ms Skelton described the effects of the disease as being similar to those of the common cold in humans - the cats sneeze a lot and have running eyes and noses. The viral disease usually runs its course in 10-14 days, but infected cats are treated with antibiotics to reduce the risk of secondary infection, says Ms Skelton.
Humans cannot catch the disease.
The black cat started hanging around a Laingholm residence last year and was handed in a month later.
She has a relaxed personality and would be suitable for most homes except those with very young children, because she might not tolerate being pushed and prodded.Michael Otto
