Two construction methods were used due to differing ground conditions.
East of Gore St (see diagram above), which is rock, needed steel sheet piles driven around the perimeter.
West of Gore St, where the ground was soft, concrete interlocking piles were used, some to a depth of 42m.
Once the piles were in place, excavation could begin.
