Q: The "no right turn" arrow at the end of Marei Rd in Penrose has been removed, although the arrow on the road still points left. Is this a permanent change?
And why is the light at the Rockfield Rd corner activated by left-turning traffic when it really isn't a problem getting on to Great South Rd at any time of the day?
I can understand the right-turning traffic being forced to make silly decisions when they take risks to turn right without the lights to help them, but the lights are going on every minute at times.
Patricia McRae, Onehunga.
A: There is no change to the "no right turn" restriction at the Marei Rd intersection. The sign that says so is to be reinstated.
And when vehicles turn right either into Great South Rd from Rockfield or turn right from Kalmia St into Great South Rd the turns activate the pedestrian crossing. This is to manage the traffic on Great South Rd, which is heavy, and to allow pedestrians to cross safely. The break in the traffic helps traffic flow management.
So, a vehicle could be turning left out of Rockfield, but the lights are likely to be activated by one turning right out of Kalmia. Confused? I am.
Q: In the earthworks linked with the widening of Esmonde Rd and the building of the busway, why are areas of bare earth, flat and in mounds, coated by hay or straw?
Ken Gilmour, Takapuna.
A: This is an environmental requirement during winter, for sediment control. Some areas need to be left bare and some mulched, to stop run-off. Is there anything the traffic planners can do to stop traffic parking across Vestey Drive as they come from Otahuhu heading towards the motorway? It's always worse in the late afternoon, as vehicles enter the intersection knowing full well they cannot exit, so they queue while waiting for a green light at Mt Wellington Highway and Sylvia Park Rd. Brad Mullins, Pakuranga.
First of all, the road rules clearly state that "a driver must not enter an intersection unless there is space for their vehicle on the other side of the intersection". So it comes down to a driver behaviour thing. Vehicles enter the roundabout without necessarily confirming that they can get out. The result is that drivers join the end of the queue which can extend across Vestey Drive. So, drive properly and courteously, people.
