KEY POINTS:
The Curran St onramp to the Harbour Bridge consists of two lanes which merge after the ramp signals. Can you use both lanes when the signals are off? An increasing number of people cut up the inside lane. The sign says "Form 2 lanes when the signals are on" but nothing about what to do when the lights are off.
- Basil Denee, Freemans Bay.
When the ramp signals are on, traffic should use two lanes. When the signals are off, the left lane reverts to being a shoulder only and motorists are not permitted to use it. Transit is using closed-circuit TV to monitor this ramp and will consider an appropriate solution if the problem persists.

What has happened with the motorway onramp signals on the Southern Motorway heading north? Apart from one at Takanini heading south, which the sign always says is turned off, nothing seems to have happened to the much vaunted scheme.
- Russell Wilson, Manukau City.
Transit's schedule for installing ramp signals involves starting at the Central Motorway Junction in the city and heading south, installing lights on all the southbound ramps. They will turn round at Drury and head north, installing lights on northbound onramps. Installation is due to start late this year and be finished early next year.
The signals are controlled by sensor pads under the road and only turn on when needed. The ones at Takanini will only be activated if there is an incident on the motorway.

Alongside the Northwestern Motorway, on the left just past the Lincoln Rd interchange, there is a bridge sitting in a paddock. What is it and how long has it been there?
- L.C. Tucker, Auckland.
It is part of the old Great North Rd, from the days before the motorway was built. The bridge crosses the Huruhuru Creek.
Transit inherited it when it began to build the Northwestern Motorway. It is a safety hazard and will be demolished during the next 12 months.
