KEY POINTS:
How will traffic coming from Stamford Park Rd and Melrose Rd in Mt Roskill be able to access Hayr Rd once the bridge is completed crossing the motorway and connecting Hayr Rd with Olsen Ave? Peter Hale, Auckland.
A nifty solution to this one. Traffic heading towards the bridge on Melrose Rd will curve to the right and go under the Hayr Rd bridge. Drivers then have the option of carrying on eastwards on Melrose Rd, a cul-de-sac, or continuing their right turn and joining Olsen Ave. From there they can turn north on to the bridge or south on Olsen Ave.
The (relatively new) traffic lights at the corner of Selwyn and Princes Sts in Onehunga cause frustration if you're heading towards Neilson St. The right hand lane is for right turners and straight-aheaders, but the green arrow is at a different time to the green light, so frequently only one car gets through. This leads to some tricky and dangerous manoeuvres as people try to catch the lights. It is much quicker to use the left lane for straight ahead, and make the right lane right-turn only. Could this be done? Penelope Wilson, Glendowie.
There is limited road space here, so the council feels that allowing two uses for the right lane, right-turning and straight ahead, is the best option. However, they are monitoring the traffic flow through the intersection, to keep an eye on the light phasing and layout.
Last year at the intersection lights of Wheturangi Rd and Campbell Rd in Greenlane, there was a pedestrian crossing from the lights to the bus shelter. This has been blanked out and an angle crossing put in that seems to serve no purpose. Why is this? Ted Audain, Auckland.
A new signalised crossing is due to be built here. This will give pedestrians more, safer, crossing opportunities.
The Albany-Puhoi Motorway extension seems to be coming on well. What is the expected opening date, or is it still mid-2009? Keith Williams, Waiwera.
Alpurt, as it is affectionately known, has made remarkable progress in its short life, and is currently six months ahead of schedule. Well done, men. God willing and weather permitting, it will open at the end of next year, six months earlier than expected.
