Q: The north side of Remuera Rd, between Green Lane East and Ladies Mile, was ripped up this year and hasn't been resealed. It borders on dangerous, with a 2cm drop from the hotmix to rough concrete, and is especially tough on cyclists. When is it going to be repaired? Liz Graham, Remuera, Bruce Millar, Auckland, M. Lawry, St John's Park, Blythe Biel, Auckland, and many others.
A: We can blame Occupational Safety and Health for the delay. A worker died in an accident at the site on February 7, and OSH has spent the best part of this year investigating. In the meantime Vector did maintenance work, and there has been a stormwater upgrade at the Minto Rd/Upland Rd intersection. But resurfacing the eastbound lanes is due to start early next month.
Q: Is it possible for an audible signal to be installed at the traffic lights at the intersection of Burns Ave and Esmonde Rd to help pedestrians? Ken Gilmour, Takapuna.
A: This intersection is going to be upgraded as part of the Esmonde Rd improvements, and included in the plans are audio signals at the lights. It should be done by March. Also to be installed are tactile devices - yellow areas of paving with raised spots - for people with vision problems.
Q: I know the Greenhithe/Albany connection will change once the road works are completed, but in the meantime the phasing of the traffic lights is ridiculous. The straight-ahead from Glenfield to Albany had less than 10 seconds when I timed it, and only four cars got through. The turn from Greenhithe to Glenfield had 90s, and the turn from Albany to Greenhithe nearly two minutes. Traffic was backing up towards Glenfield, while there was no backlog to Greenhithe at all. Is there any way traffic from Glenfield could get more time? Ian Cameron, North Shore.
A: The phasing of these lights, like all others, is based on the demands of the roads leading to them. Glenfield to Albany gets between 13s and 23s, as it has two lanes and traffic can clear quickly. Queuing from the roundabout makes the approach to Albany more difficult, but it will all change when the motorway opens next year.
