Q. What do you call those raised reflective dits on the roads that help keep drivers in their lanes? - Barbara Thomborson, Auckland.
A. Cats' eyes. There are also strips of raised dits along the outside of some roads that make a horrible noise when you drive over them. They are called, in racing circles at least, rumble strips.

Q. I catch the Link bus from Three Lamps in Ponsonby Rd into town a couple of days a week about 8.45am. Why do the buses stop at Victoria Park for five minutes or more? Is it to space the buses so two don't arrive at the same time? That stop often makes me late for work and it's very frustrating. - Neil Porten, Avondale.
A. You're right on the money, Neil, that's exactly why the buses stop and wait. The circuit time for Link buses is pretty closely timed, and allows for congestion in certain spots, but when this doesn't happen and everything runs smoothly, the buses have to wait for a while to get back on schedule. Ironic, isn't it?

Q. Are they going to put in more passing lanes on State Highway 2 between Tauranga and the Bombay Hills? If so, when? - Lionel Hansen, Tauranga.
A. Transit has a number of passing lanes in its 10-year plan: at Morton Rd (to be completed by the end of 2005), Tuapiro Rd (mid 2007), Wharawhara Rd (mid 2007), Maramarua (end 2005), south of Paeroa (end 2005) and Waikino (mid 2006).
