KEY POINTS:
The mystery woman found floating in Auckland's Waitemata Harbour yesterday may be identified later today.
The body of the woman, initially thought to be elderly, was found floating on the eastern side of Waiheke Island as searchers looked of two children missing in a launch tragedy.
The bodies of the children, aged eight and five, were later found trapped in the cabin of the launch which sank quickly after taking on water about 2am yesterday.
Police said the woman was not connected to the launch tragedy and may have been in the water for two or three days.
Police said today the death was being treated as a "sudden death" and not yet as a homicide.
A post mortem examination was due to be held on the body today to find the cause of death and the woman's ethnicity although she was thought to be caucasian.
The woman was wearing camouflage trousers and a three-quarter sleeved black top. She also had on a thin gold chain around her neck.
Yesterday police appealed for help from anyone who may know of a missing friend, relative or colleague.
