KEY POINTS:
A cold night has left some North Island roads treacherous.
Icy conditions are plaguing the portion of the Napier-Taupo Road near Rangitaiki.
Police say the Desert Road, and the stretch of State Highway One between Taupo and Putaruru, also warrant extra care.
There is black ice on State Highway Two through the Waikino Gorge, and the Thames Coast Road is open but with caution advised.
