Another icy blast is moving up the country today, causing problems on the roads.
State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford was closed after 15cm of snow fell in southern Fiordland, but opened late this morning to vehicles with chains.
Many other roads in the South Island remain marginal, and have been closed to towing vehicles. Chains are advised on the alpine passes.
A police spokesman said there had been a number of minor accidents throughout the South Island and people should use commonsense on the roads.
The central North Island is expected to bear the brunt of the cold southwesterly flow later today.
The MetService has warned of snow falling down to 800 metres between Taihape and Tongariro National Park today and tomorrow.
Police have said snow and ice are already making the Desert Road treacherous.
