KEY POINTS:
Can you tell me who controls the motorway video cameras? I was wondering if there was any way these videos could be streamed on to the internet. This would be useful for people who could delay their travel if they knew the motorways were congested.
Jack Hill, Auckland.
The cameras are controlled by the Auckland Traffic Management Centre. They keep an eye on all the camera footage at their North Shore base on a huge array of TV screens. Webcam views of motorway traffic in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington are available on www.trafficnz.info or www.transit.govt.nz, which are updated every minute or so.
On Mt Albert Rd heading towards Royal Oak before the St Andrews Rd intersection, there is a "School zone ends" sign. Around the corner in St Andrews Rd is the drop-off area for Three Kings School and Carlson School. Further along Mt Albert Rd is Marcellin College. Why does the zone end before a section of road where children are trying to cross with no zebra crossing or lights?
Gerry Wright, concerned grandfather of Auckland.
Land Transport New Zealand regulations specify that school speed zones should extend 300m to 500m along the main traffic route closest to the school that meets criteria for a zone, in this case Three Kings. Carlson and Marcellin are not within the limits specified for Three Kings School, nor do traffic conditions justify extending the zone. But council plans to install a pedestrian traffic light outside Marcellin this financial year.
