Retired British businessman Ian Foldesi, 64, who lived in the seaside suburb of Lyttelton with his wife Marie, was killed by falling rocks as he walked in the Port Hills near his home.
The magnitude-6.3 earthquake sparked a rockslide that swept across the track and carried him 25 metres down a cliff face. His body was found by the eldest of his three daughters, Sarah.
Marie said her husband had been a private man who really had time only for his family.
"He was so proud of me and all his daughters. He loved all their different funny ways and would just let them be them."
