This man in black is a firm believer in sacrifice and perseverance - and it would seem it's paid off.
All Black Beauden Barrett has a job many would envy. Growing up on a farm in New Plymouth and excelling in the sport through high school, it was no surprise when Barrett came to selectors attention at age 19. Soon he was travelling the world, playing for the Hurricanes as well as the All Blacks.
We caught up with Barrett before he flew to Chicago, to showcase his skills once again in the coveted black jersey when the All Blacks play the US Eagles this Sunday.
As a teenager, what did you want to be when you "grew up"? I wanted to be the physio for a sports team, because I never thought I'd get there as a player!
Why did you choose to be a rugby player? From a young age it's all I knew - I went to school with a rugby ball under my wing, wanting to be just like my dad.
What does your typical day entail? Wake up, big breakfast, gym session/weights, plenty of meetings, lunch, power nap, team training, pool recovery and ice baths, dinner - then spend the rest of the night chilling out with the boys, either playing cards or watching TV (we are all obsessed with Suits at the moment).
Best and worst parts about your job? Best: the buzz you get when you get to wear the black jersey and represent New Zealand. The freebies aren't bad either, haha. Worst: being away from my family, girlfriend and friends.
What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out on your career? Never ever take anything for granted.
What would be your advice to someone wanting to also wear that black jersey? I guess hard work is the key to everything - I am a firm believer in sacrifice and perseverance. You've got to be willing to work for it and willing to learn. I am still learning every day and trying to better myself.
How did you get to where you are today? My first year out of school I worked for an energy company in my hometown, Taranaki, while training and playing for New Zealand Sevens. From there I played provincial rugby, which then led to a Super 15 contract. During my second season with the Hurricanes I was selected as an All Black. I have been fortunate enough to remain in the squad since then.
If you weren't doing this, what would you do?
If all went according to plan I would have just graduated and probably be looking for a job as a physical education teacher. I have always had a passion for sport and helping people improve.
Three things you couldn't live without at work?
1. My notebook - this where I write anything from game strategies to review notes.
2. Adidas Predator boots - I have always worn adidas boots and as a team we are lucky enough to be sponsored by them.
3. Kicking tee - an important tool required for my job. I currently kick off my own tee, which I am hoping to launch by Christmas.
Three top tips for success in your industry? 1. Discipline. 2. Hunger. 3. A good life balance.
