KEY POINTS:
A Hybrid Technologies petrol-electric supercar will give motorists the best of everything, the company says.
It has enough oomph to see off a Ferrari, while returning fuel economy of 1.2 litres/100km - or 220mpg.
And the North Carolina-based designer says it could be in production by the end of 2009.
The muscular machine with the Porsche Carrera GT-style rear is ready to take on the world's elite motors. And the petrol-electric powertrain isn't the only advanced technology set to feature. Regenerative braking, to charge the batteries when the car is decelerating, will also appear, as will movable aerodynamics to alter downforce at varying speeds.
The car has yet to be given a name, but it has been confirmed as an entry to the Automotive X contest, an international competition offering a US$5 million ($6.5 million) first prize to the best production-ready vehicle that can achieve more than 2.8 litres/100km (100mpg).
Hybrid Technologies has hinted that a fully electric version with a range of 250-300km will also be made.
