Firefighters quickly tackled a large blaze at a Lower Hutt building supplies warehouse this morning, bringing it under control in less than an hour.
The Fire Service was called to the Crighton ITM building centre on Hutt Park Rd, in the industrial area of Gracefield east of Petone, at 8.23am.
The large 50m by 30m single-storey warehouse was well ablaze when firefighters arrived, Fire Service central communications shift manager Tim Rees said.
"It's a relatively big building and it was well involved when they arrived," he said.
Ten fire engines and four specialist vehicles, including a command unit and aerial appliances, brought the blaze under control by about 9am.
"They're winding down now ... they've got the fire knocked," Mr Rees said.
The response worked as it should have and firefighters had the blaze under control quickly, he said.
ITM supplies timber, building supplies and hardware, according to its website.
Mr Rees said it was not yet known what caused the fire or if anyone was in the building.
