Police and the Fire Service are investigating the cause of an explosion at a garage in Upper Hutt, which has left a man fighting for his life in hospital.
The 20-year-old is in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital in Auckland with extensive burns.
Emergency services were called to the blast yesterday afternoon at 12.45.
An 18-year-old woman and a young baby who were in the garage at the time escaped with minor burns.
They have spent the night in Hutt Hospital.
Police say it appears the explosion was the result of a welding accident.
