The husband of a woman who died in a Hastings house yesterday was arrested in an orchard late last night and charged with murder.
Hastings police said they were called to an address in Tarbet St, Flaxmere around 3.45pm yesterday after a woman was reported to have been assaulted.
Police officers arrived to find a woman in a serious condition.
An ambulance was called, but the 26-year-old woman died at the scene of her injuries.
Detective Sam Aberahama, of Hastings CIB, said the suspect had left the house by the time police arrived, but was tracked to an orchard in Fernhill, a rural area about 10km northwest of Hastings.
A 37-year-old man will appear in Napier District Court later today charged with murder.
"ESR scientists are assisting police at the scene while further inquiries are continuing with neighbours and family members of both the deceased and the arrested man."
