Husband and wife killed in crash named

A Wanganui husband and wife who died in a crash near the city yesterday have been named as George Hemi Grey, 54, and Diane Adelaide Grey, 53.

They died at the scene of the crash about 4pm on a three-lane section of State Highway 3 just north of Kai Iwi, about 12km north of Wanganui.

Wanganui police were today still trying to piece together exactly how the crash happened.

Inspector Tom Ireland, of the police central communications centre, said yesterday it appeared that a southbound car heading downhill collided with a northbound one which was passing another northbound vehicle.

Wanganui Fire Service senior station officer Gary Wilson said there were seven people involved, spread over the three vehicles.

Four people were taken to Wanganui Hospital by ambulance -- one in serious condition and three in moderate condition.
