KEY POINTS:
A husband and wife were both caught drink driving, driving home in separate cars from a Tauranga pub last night.
The man recorded a reading of 669 mcg/l when he was stopped by police officers from the Traffic Alcohol Group in Greerton about 10.30pm.
His 39-year-old wife was then stopped and produced a reading of 641mcg.
The legal limit is 400mcg.
Police were unable to say today where in Greerton the couple were stopped and whether they were on the same road.
However, the couple had been drinking at the same pub.
Police said they decided to drive the "very short distance" home in their separate cars.
Both were taken to Greerton Police Station for alcohol testing.
The man was suspended from driving for 28 days and the woman for 12 hours.
Both will appear in Tauranga District Court this month. Senior Sergeant in charge of road policing, Ian Campion, said police were "aghast" that a couple who had been drinking would drive separate vehicles home while over the limit.
"It just defies logic," he said.
