Police want to speak to the occupants of two vehicles after a 19-year-old man was found with head injuries in Elliot St, Papakura, about 4.30am on Sunday.
The man is believed to have spent the evening socialising in Drury, before making his way to Papakura. He was in a serious condition yesterday in intensive care at Auckland City Hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Albie Alexander of Papakura said the man's movements from 1.30am to 4.30am were still unaccounted for.
Police want to speak to the occupants of a dark four-wheel-drive vehicle that stopped near the victim about the time of the attack. They are also keen to speak to the driver, or passengers, of a white vehicle also seen in Elliot St.
Mr Alexander wants anyone who was driving in the Elliot St or Beach Rd area at the time to contact police, also anyone who thinks he might have seen the victim - a European male who was wearing only jeans and T-shirt on a very cold night - on or near Great South Rd between Drury and Papakura between 1.30am and 4.30am.
