KEY POINTS:
Police have named a man who died after the car he was driving crashed into a stray horse in Waikato on Saturday.
Sergeant Brent Wallace said John Robert William Mitchell, 23, from Pukekohe, was driving along Te Ohaki Rd about 5km north of Huntly at 6.30pm when his car collided with the horse.
The horse was also killed while a passenger in the car suffered minor injuries.
Mr Wallace said it appeared about five horses had escaped from a paddock after a gate latch was broken.
"At the time of the crash they were being herded by members of the public who were trying to contain them and slow traffic down," he said.
