Hunters rescued in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park

Two hunters who became stuck in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park have been rescued safely.

The pair were found on a range behind Liebig Hut in the Murchison Valley about 2pm today, said police mid-South Canterbury area commander Inspector Dave Gaskin.

They had become stuck after getting themselves into a "precarious'' position, he said.

"They went up a step too far, couldn't get down and couldn't go up, and basically just needed a hand,'' said Mr Gaskin.

Police received a call from the missing party via satellite phone earlier today, however it was "extremely distorted and muffled''.

Poor weather conditions had also hampered rescue efforts, but the pair were found safe and well this afternoon.

They were airlifted out of the area by rescue helicopter.

"They were fine,'' said Mr Gaskin. "Very thankful to have someone come out and give them a hand.''
