A hunter's fear of being shot by his mates has translated into a world first for hunting safety.
Lower Hutt man Michael Scott's been flooded with interest since news of his invention aired earlier this month.
The industrial designer and keen hunter's invented an alarm system for guns which beeps if the firearm is aimed at a person instead of a deer.
Mr Scott says the idea came to him after a nerve-wracking hunting experience.
"I was with a couple of guys and we ... split up, and there's an animal nearby and I couldn't see them and I knew they had their guns loaded and were pretty keyed up to see this deer, and I had recollections of all the newspaper articles I'd seen about the terrible accidents that happen and I kind of feared something like that's going to happen to me, what should I do?"
