Four hunters found safe and well yesterday after being reported missing in bush near Whakatane were unaware a major search had been mounted for them, police said.
A rescue operation began on Saturday when Henry Nikora, 50, his grandson, Jessie Nikora, 8, and brothers Raymond, 30, and Raniera Tekupara, 15, were reported overdue from a one-day hunting trip.
Rescuers were particularly worried because Raniera did not have medication with him for a heart condition.
The four were eventually found by the crew of the Rotorua-based Tenon rescue helicopter about 9.30am yesterday in a hut in the upper Whakatane River area of the Te Urewera National Park.
Detective Sergeant John Wilson said the incident demonstrated the importance of hunters advising someone of their plans and sticking to them.
