The body of a hunter has been recovered after he fell to his death in rugged terrain near Fox Glacier on the West Coast, say police.
The Queenstown man, aged 55, was found in the Cook Valley after his companion tramped eight hours to raise the alarm, Constable William Parker of Franz Josef police said.
The man died about midday on Friday when he lost his footing and fell about 100 metres. He was dead by the time his companion reached him, Mr Parker said.
A rescue helicopter lifted his body out about 7.30am yesterday, a Garden City Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said.
Both men were experienced hunters and had been in the popular hunting area since Tuesday.
Police have informed his next of kin, but have not released his name.
His body is in Greymouth and police are investigating the death on behalf of the coroner.
