KEY POINTS:
A Northland deer hunter missing for four days in the Kaimanawa Ranges survived on a muesli bar and water.
Andreas Thirling, 50, from Ruakaka, walked out of the bush onto State Highway 1 near Turangi last night and was given a lift by a passing motorist to Turangi Police Station.
He was taken to Turangi Hospital where he was given a check over and declared to be in good shape.
Rescue personnel and a helicopter had been searching the region since Mr Thirling, an inexperienced hunter, was reported missing last Friday.
He was in a party of three hunting deer in the Waipakihi River Valley. He went on a solo hunt on Thursday morning and failed to return that night.
Search leader Senior Constable Barry Shepherd said today that he had a "quick chat" with Mr Thirling last night but did not go into details about where he had been.
He was a "bit dazed, but seemed in surprisingly good condition".
