An American tourist had a cold and harrowing night in South Westland after suffering a fall during a hunting trip over the weekend.
The man in his 50s was out with a hunting guide on Sunday when he fell about 40m near the Paringa River.
Emergency services were called, however bad weather conditions -- including snow -- meant they could not rescue the tourist immediately.
Police said the guide stayed with the man overnight.
A team from the Mt Cook Alpine Rescue crew was called to the area yesterday morning and took the tourist to Twizel for medical treatment.
