The top job at Wairarapa District Health Board is expected to be advertised shortly.
Since 2012, Wairarapa DHB and Hutt Valley DHB have shared one chief executive, Graham Dyer, until he stepped down at the end of April.
There had reportedly been growing tensions between Mr Dyer, doctors and board members over cost cutting and merging services with the Capital & Coast DHB.
After Mr Dyer's resignation, the two DHBs decided to appoint separate chief executives due to the "different pressures and demands" in each region.
Wairarapa DHB chairman Derek Milne said they hoped to have a shortlist of candidates in eight to 10 weeks.
