Building researcher and energy scientist Nigel Isaacs is hunting for the country's oldest hot water cylinders.
The electric hot water heater was invented in New Zealand in 1915.
Mr Isaacs notes: "Lloyd Mandeno developed one of the world's first electric storage hot water cylinders. Built of corrugated iron with pumice insulation, it took a couple of years for the inner tank to leak."
