A customer with a taste for fish, potato fritters and cheese and tomato toasted sandwiches is being sought as a possible witness to an attempted robbery at Waikanae, on the Kapiti Coast.
Police have appealed for help after the attempted robbery at a Waikanae Beach takeaway shop last Wednesday.
About 5pm, a man, wearing a beanie with cut out eyes covering his face, entered the Rangihiroa Street business demanding money from the owner.
Detective Matt Campbell, of Kapiti CIB, said the man produced a knife which caused the owner to back off into the rear of the business. The man then attempted to open the cash register by banging on it from over the counter, but left shortly after, unsuccessful in his attempt.
"We believe a customer who had been in the shop minutes before placing his order, was waiting outside while the event took place," Mr Campbell said.
Police are appealing for the person to come forward as they may have seen the offender.
"The customer is described as elderly, approximately 60-70 years old, who is a regular at the takeaway shop and on this occasion ordered a piece of fish, two potato fritters and a cheese and tomato toasted sandwich," Mr Campbell said.
