KEY POINTS:
A Greymouth District Court failed to reach a decision in a rape trial yesterday.
Thirty-one hours after deliberations started, including a night at a hotel, jurors called it quits at 3.30pm yesterday.
Judge Phil Moran then remanded the matter over to a future date for a second trial.
The case began on July 14.
The accused, a 30-year-old former West Coast rugby player faced a total of 12 charges - seven of rape, one of forcing the woman, about 30 years his senior, to commit an indecent act, and four of indecent assault.
The Crown alleged sex occurred two or three times a week over a long period and involving violence.
Most of the offending occurred in 2001 and 2002, but the woman alleged isolated incidents also occurred between 2002 and 2005.
