KEY POINTS:
A Greymouth District Court jury has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a former West Coast rugby player accused of raping his landlady.
Judge Phil Moran remanded the accused for a second trial on a future date, after the jury could not return a verdict yesterday - 31 hours after it started deliberations.
The 30-year-old accused faced 12 charges - seven of rape, one of forcing a woman, about 30 years his senior, to commit an indecent act, and four of indecent assault.
The Crown alleged sex occurred two or three times a week over a long period and involving violence.
Most of the offending occurred in 2001 and 2002, but the woman alleged isolated incidents also occurred between 2002 and 2005.
